Enlisted at the age of 18. He served in the Royal Field Artillery, Trench Mortar    battery, where he was awarded the Military Medal in November 1916 for    “conspicuous gallantry and bravery in keeping to his post under heavy    bombardment”.  Before the war  he worked at Kiveton Park Colliery, and was the son of John William and Mary Ellen    Hydes of Woodall.

 4th (Collingwood) Battalion, 1st Brigade Royal Naval Division
Enlisted  before the First World War in the Royal Fleet Reserve Portsmouth. In June 1913,  he was transferred to the 4th (Collingwood) Battalion, 1st Brigade Royal Naval  Division. He  fought in the defence of Antwerp; on the 8th of October the Royal Naval  Division were ordered to withdraw; of the 700 men of the Collingwood Battalion  only 22 got back to England the rest were either captured by the Germans or  interned  at Groningen in Holland. Horace was one of those interned at Groningen.

Thomas  served as a Driver/Gunner in the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery in  France and Salonika where he contracted Malaria, which remained with him all  his life. He was discharged on 14/3/1919: Thomas the son of Thomas and Elizabeth  Laking, Firvale, was baptised at Harthill Church 17th November 1884, with his surname recorded as Lakin. |

On 24th July 1917 he married Lucy Storey the daughter of William Storey, at All Hallows Church, Harthill.  On 20th May 1918 he was listed as missing in action. On 20th November 1918 He was reported as a prisoner of war in Germany.
 On 20th January 1919 He was released  from Germany, and arrived back in England

Joseph had  previously served as a soldier, and was a reservist at the time of the outbreak  of war and was recalled to his regiment at the age of 27. He was wounded in the  leg. He lived at Firvale.  Joseph was the elder brother of George Waplington - Private  10910, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards aged 19, who was reported  missing in action on the Western Front on 22nd December 1914, and was reported  as having been killed in action some 14 months later on the 4th February 1916. |
